10 D Mid-Year Exam - What do you need to know?

CHEMISTRY

Atomic Theory

(NB a periodic table will be provided which only contains the atomic number and Symbol and position of each element)

You will need to know

Symbols and names of first 20 elements as well as common elements Lead, Copper, Iron, Bromine, Iodine, Zinc, Silver.
Nature and characteristics of subatomic particles (electrons, protons and neutrons). Position of these in the atom.
Ideas of nucleus, electron shells etc.
Octet rule.
Electron shell filling rules. This can be covered by memorising the electron configuration of the first 30 elements
K, L, M … notation eg the electron configuration of sodium is 2,8,1

Ionic bonding

(NB the symbols of the complex ions will be supplied eg sulfate SO₄^2-, but not the single atom ions eg Al³⁺ that can be determined from the periodic table)

Formation of ions as predicted by the octet rule
Cations and anions
Ionic bonding
Writing ionic formulas given the name of the compound
Naming the compound

Chemical Reactions (NB: Solubility tables will be provided)

Precipates
Precipitation reactions
Balancing reactions

Calculation of speed
